A Giant Visitor Takes Hold in the Southeast
First spotted in 2014 along the Gulf Coast, the striking yellow‑black Joro spider (Trichonephila clavata) has rapidly expanded its range throughout Georgia and South Carolina. Its massive, golden‑hued webs and the sheer size of the females sparked immediate concern among entomologists and arachnologists. The prevailing fear was that this newcomer would outcompete native orb‑weavers for the same insect prey, potentially starving indigenous species and reshaping local food webs.
Why the Alarm?
Most native orb‑weavers employ a sit‑and‑wait strategy, hanging in their silken traps until a hapless insect collides with the thread. The Joro spider, however, spins far larger, more conspicuous webs that could dominate a given patch of foliage. Scientists worried that such expansive structures would monopolise the same flying insects that native spiders rely on, creating direct competition and possibly driving some native populations to decline.
DNA Metabarcoding Reveals a Different Menu
In October 2021, a team led by University of Georgia researcher Jason Schmidt collected 356 female orb‑weavers from 52 sites across Georgia and South Carolina, including 213 Joro spiders. By extracting and sequencing trace DNA fragments from the spiders’ gut contents—a technique known as DNA metabarcoding—the researchers could identify the exact groups of insects each spider had consumed, even when the prey left little to no physical evidence.
What the Data Showed
The analysis uncovered DNA from 164 distinct insect groups across all samples. Remarkably, the Joro spiders harboured at least 26 prey groups that were absent from the diets of three native orb‑weaver species examined in the same study. These groups were identified at the family level, indicating that the Joro spider is tapping into a suite of insects that native spiders typically ignore.
Most of the newly recorded prey were tiny flies and other small, often pest‑like insects—think of them as the “popcorn” of the arachnid world. This dietary niche means the Joro spider is not directly competing with native spiders for the same resources; instead, it is helping to control insect populations that humans usually consider nuisances.
No Detectable Impact on Native Spiders
Crucially, the study found no significant shift in the diets of native orb‑weavers between sites where Joro spiders were present and sites where they were absent. If the invasive species were displacing locals, researchers would have expected native spiders to switch to alternative prey or to show signs of nutritional stress. The data, however, revealed a stable feeding pattern, suggesting that coexistence is currently sustainable.
What This Means for the Public
Encountering a Joro spider in your backyard is unlikely to be a cause for alarm. Schmidt describes the spiders as “remarkably calm,” noting that despite their imposing size they never bite and often crawl over a researcher’s face without incident. Their presence may even be a boon, as they mop up swarms of small flies that would otherwise become a nuisance.
While the Joro spider’s rapid spread continues to be monitored, the latest findings paint a more nuanced picture than the initial invasion panic. Rather than a ruthless competitor, this giant arachnid appears to carve out a unique ecological role, feeding on insects that native spiders largely overlook.
