When the carcasses arrived, the lions spent an average of 76 minutes a day tearing flesh from the bones—almost three times longer than the 26 minutes recorded under their previous routine of pre‑portioned meat portions. The act of pulling, ripping, and dismembering a full hide engages muscles and instincts that are largely dormant when food is presented in bite‑size chunks. This more labor‑intensive process appears to satisfy a deep‑rooted predatory drive, encouraging the cats to work through their meals much like their wild counterparts.

Restful Intervals Mirror Natural Fasting

Following each feast, the lions entered prolonged periods of inactivity. During the days when no carcass was present, they gradually became more active, reflecting the natural cycle of feast‑then‑fast that characterises wild lion packs. The researchers noted that the animals’ resting bouts were not merely a response to satiety; they seemed to be an intrinsic part of the rhythm that balances high‑energy consumption with recovery.

Behavioral Shifts Beyond the Feeding Window

Beyond eating and resting, the study tracked stereotypic pacing—a repetitive circuit that often signals stress or anticipation in captive predators. Interestingly, pacing spikes coincided with predictable events such as caretaker arrivals or enclosure changes, rather than with hunger alone. This suggests that the lions learned to associate specific cues with upcoming activities, highlighting the importance of environmental predictability in managing captive welfare.
