Relying on a base tan can lead to complacency. Individuals may apply a thinner layer of sunscreen, select a lower SPF, or extend their time in direct sunlight, believing the tan will compensate. In practice, this behavior often results in greater cumulative UV exposure and a heightened risk of long‑term damage, including premature aging and skin cancer.

Practical Recommendations

The most reliable strategy remains the consistent use of a broad‑spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, reapplying every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Complement this with protective clothing, wide‑brimmed hats, and shade whenever possible. Accepting a light tan as a badge of honor is tempting, but the science makes it clear that it is a poor substitute for proven sun‑care measures.
