UNESCO’s Monitoring and the Heritage Status

Since 2021, UNESCO has kept a vigilant eye on the reef, noting a steep decline in hard coral cover between 2024 and 2025. The sixth major bleaching episode unfolded amid record‑high sea temperatures, prompting concerns that the reef might be listed as a threatened World Heritage site. While the United Nations recently averted that designation, the warning remains: the reef’s future hangs in the balance.

Compounding Pressures Beyond Heat

Rising ocean temperatures are only part of the problem. Coastal development, runoff laden with nutrients, and aggressive crown‑of‑thorns starfish outbreaks further strain the system. These stressors, combined with more frequent extreme weather, create a perfect storm that jeopardizes the reef’s resilience.
